CHARMCO- Whenever the no. 5 James Monroe Mavericks and the 6th ranked Greenbrier West Cavaliers get together for battle you can count on two different things: big attendance and passion.

The evidence pointed to just that on Friday night, Jan. 26 in Charmco when both schools went toe-to-toe on the girls’ basketball court in what is quickly becoming one of the top border rivalries this state has to offer.

This one was back-and forth through a half of play, but the second half belonged to the Lady Mavericks as they escaped with a 61-48 victory.

Mya Dunlap erupted for 15 second half points for the Mavs and paced her team the whole way.

Preslee Treadway scored 23 points for Greenbrier West in the losing effort.

The game turned slightly with 4:48 to play when west’s Abigail Thomas went down with a knee injury and had to be helped off the floor. The Mavericks scored nine points in a row after that and pushed their lead to 55-43.

Mary Beth Meadows (17 points) and Ava Dunlap (11 pts) also balanced the scoring out for James Monroe.

Treadway was the only Cav in double figures and Maddie Fields and Thomas each scored 7 points.

Look for a full recap from Michael Goddard at WVDN.com
