GREENBRIER COUNTY W.Va. (WVDN) – Cole Morgan is a Greenbrier East senior embarking on an incredible journey to help rid the planet of toxic plastic waste.

Beginning Feb. 1, Eagle Scout candidate Cole Morgan is joining Trex, Inc. in a challenge to recycle 1,000 pounds of plastic in one year. He has teamed up with Montwell Commons and his former Eagle Scout Master, Cliff Baker, for support. Montwell Commons will receive a NexTrex recycled bench in honor of his accomplishment. You may start saving your plastics now.

Morgan has set a goal to gather 1,000 pounds of types #2 and #4 plastics, which cover most plastic bags. Specifically, plastics allowable are plastic wraps from pallets, grocery bags, bubble wrap, produce bags and deli/meat wraps, ice bags, Ziploc or other baggies, dry cleaning bags, cereal box liners, newspaper or umbrella sleeves, plastic e-commerce mailers, bread bags, contractor or trash bags and the like. The basic rule of what is recyclable for his project is any plastic you can press your thumb through. (See Recycle Lady from Thursday, Jan. 25, for more information.)

This is an excellent opportunity to team up with the family or classroom, teaching young ones that recycling is an easy and pertinent way to help the Earth’s increasing problem with plastic in oceans and landfills. Anyone can help, and the more help, the better. Set aside a container or vessel to toss all your bags in, and Morgan will have pick-up points where community members can bring recyclables. The project will run an entire year, and donating helps Morgan reach his goal of Eagle Scout.

So far, drop-off points are Lewisburg United Methodist Church at 1133 E. Washington St., Old Stone Presbyterian Church at 644 Church St, Lewisburg, Ronceverte Recycling Center at 812 Monroe Avenue, Ronceverte and Amy’s Market at 990 Jefferson Street N., Lewisburg. Mention Cole Morgans’ name when dropping off, and it’s as simple as that! If collecting in a trash bag, throw it all in! Be sure to let someone know when you’re dropping it off so they can put it in the proper place for Morgan to retrieve.

If you have questions about the project, email Cole at colemorgan889@gmail.com.
