LEWISBURG W.Va. (WVDN) – The painting group began in 1974 with two artists who just wanted to get together to paint and share ideas. They began meeting in each other’s homes, then later, as several more artists joined them, they met in the Rainelle Library and the Rupert Community Center. Eventually, others joined them, and they came up with the group name Greenbrier Artists.
In 1984, eleven of the artists held their first group show at the Greenbrier Community College, which was at the WVSOM location at that time. Those artists were Kathleen Hall, Theresa Currence, Jenevie Newman, Jeanne Brenneman, Romney Collins, Carol Mankins, Betty Bosley, Betty Carter, Nita Honaker, Pat Legg and Betty McClung.
This tradition has continued as the group now has over 70 members, who still meet each week to paint and promote art in the community.
Watch for more tidbits of Greenbrier Artists’ history as the group prepares for their big 50th Anniversary Exhibit at the Visitors’ Center in Lewisburg in October.
