LEWISBURG W.Va. (WVDN) – As we step into the promising new year of 2024, the city of Lewisburg eagerly prepares for one of its most anticipated events; the annual Shanghai Parade. With a dazzling array of participants, vibrant floats and the spirit of community, this parade promises to be a memorable celebration to kick off the year. Here is some vital information to know before heading out to enjoy the parade.
Parade Route:
The procession will wind its way along Washington Street, heading west from Lee Street to Church Street For those looking to catch all the action, the judges’ stand will be strategically placed on Washington Street at City Hall.
Date and Time:
Mark your calendars for Monday, Jan. 1, at the stroke of noon. The parade will commence at noon, ensuring a lively start to the new year.
Lineup:
For those joining the spectacle, the lineup is on Lee Street, situated between the United Methodist Church and WVSOM. Note: The lineup won’t be behind the old Lewisburg Elementary School. The festivities will kick off promptly at 11 a.m.
Parking Precautions:
To ensure smooth proceedings, on-street parking along the parade route will not be permitted on the morning of Jan. 1. Residents of Lee Street from Washington Street to Greenbrier Road are kindly requested not to park on Lee Street on the morning of the parade.
Categories and Prizes:
The heart of the parade lies in its diverse categories, each offering a chance to shine. Whether it’s the elegance of equestrian entries, the charm of antique cars or the creativity of floats, there’s a category for everyone. Prizes range from $25 to $55, celebrating the efforts and enthusiasm of participants.
Special Prizes:
In addition to the category prizes, the parade introduces special accolades, including the prestigious Joe Ellis Memorial Tradition Award, the Mary Satterfield Spirit of Shanghai Award, the Chairman’s Award and the Jim Wills Memorial Award – a heartfelt tribute to someone who adored this parade.
Note to Participants:
All entrants must inform parade lineup officials of their chosen category. There is no preregistration, so participants are encouraged to be at the lineup area by 11 a.m.
A Sweet Reminder:
Candy can add an extra layer of delight to the parade experience, and participants are welcome to pass it out by hand. However, a gentle reminder – keep the streets clean and avoid throwing candy. Throwing candy is not permitted.
Keep the Sirens Silent:
To maintain a peaceful and enjoyable atmosphere, organizers kindly request that sirens be kept silent throughout the parade.
Prize Distribution:
The excitement doesn’t end with the parade. Prizes will be distributed in front of City Hall immediately after the procession. Don’t forget to pick up your prize, if unclaimed, it will be available at City Hall until Jan. 31.
