Carol Hayes Cales

Carol Hayes Cales, 76, of Lewisburg, WV, passed away November 22, 2023, just one day prior to her 77th birthday.

Born November 23, 1946, in Lewisburg at the home of her maternal grandparents, Dora and Lonnie Forren, she was the daughter of the late Joe Blackburn Hayes and Mary Forren Hayes.

After graduating from Lewisburg High School, Carol moved to Rockville, MD, and then to Fort Worth, TX, working for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the General Services Administration. During her 37 year career with the federal government, she received the Pride Award for Excellence in Customer Service, Exceptional Service Award, Commendable Service Award, and Supervisor of the Year in the States of Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas.

She received her BA Degree in Public Administration from Upper Iowa University and certification from Building Owners and Managers Institute (BOMI).

After retiring, Carol moved back to Lewisburg and was Office Manager for United Way of the Greenbrier Valley. She was a lifelong member of Old Stone Presbyterian Church, being an Elder and Trustee. She also held various offices on Presbyterian Women’s Council, received Presbyterian Women’s Honorary Life Membership, was active in STAIR Tutoring Program, Gwen’s Meals, and Americana Thrift Shop. She was a member of Quota International of Greenbrier County and a past board member of Shepherd’s Center of Greenbrier Valley.

Some adventures on her “bucket list” were taking a hot air balloon ride, trying to ski (failed), taking a barefoot cruise to British Virgin Islands, mission trip to Fiji Island, and mission trip to Belize. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, dancing, working jigsaw puzzles, walking, and yard work.

Those left to cherish her memory include her brother, Joe Blackburn Hayes, Jr. (Cathy); nephew, Jay Hayes (Kim); sister, Linda Hayes; as well as several cousins and her many, many friends.

As requested, her ashes will be placed in the columbarium at Old Stone Presbyterian Church, and a private family memorial service will be held at that time.
