Deer Season To Open
For the first time since 1917, it will be lawful to kill deer this fall in West Virginia. The five years of the closed season have given the deer a fine chance in the territory in which they had become practically extinct and in other more removed sections they have increased at a rapid rate.

Cigarette Tax Nets Millions
West Virginia’s penny-a-pack cigarette tax netted $2,146,515 during its first year, Tax Commissioner C. H. Koontz announced. The tax was one of several imposed by the 1947 Legislature as it sought additional funds to finance a new and higher salary scale for the state’s school teachers.
Aide Horses Win
Three of George Aide’s East Rainelle prize show and race horses have again won honors for their proud owner in the Lewis County Boots and Saddle Club horse show held at Weston. Ralph Ropy Windsor, three-gaited horse, won the championship in the three-gated horse show and first place in the open three-gaited class.
Buy’s Scout House
The American Red Cross purchased the Lewisburg Boy Scout house. The house is located at the southwest corner of Foster and Court streets. The Boy Scouts abandoned the use of the house due to surrounding conditions, and they will erect a suitable house on the Lewisburg playground.

Tom Greenstreet New Court Restaurant Owner
Thomas A. Greenstreet is the new owner of the Court Restaurant in Lewisburg. Regarded as one of the most popular eating places in Greenbrier County, the restaurant has been owned by Emauel Rodoussakis for two decades. “I plan to offer the same fine food and good service that Mr. Rodoussakis has made famous,” Tom said. “I will be using the same cooks and most of the other employees have agreed to stay.”
Sale To Reds Pushes Up Food Prices
Americans, both as consumers and taxpayers, are paying for last year’s wheat sale to the Soviet Union, a congressional investigating agency reported Monday. The General Accounting Office (GAO) said not only did the U. S. price of wheat rise as a direct result of the deal, but that prices of beef, pork, poultry, eggs and dairy products rose because of higher feed-grain costs.

Martha Mitchell said today she completely supports her husband in his Watergate testimony. The wife of the former attorney general and Nixon campaign director told UPI in an early morning telephone call, “I want you to know that my husband is absolutely correct in all of his testimony. He is completely honest. I’m standing completely beside him because I know he’s telling the truth.”

Work Gets Underway On New Building At Crawford’s Complex
Work is now underway on the construction of a new 40,000-square-foot building at the Crawford’s complex in Fairlea. “We’ll be back in full operation by the end of the year, said Roger Boone, owner of the property and long-time operator of Crawford’s Galaxy Food Center. The old Crawford’s store was gutted by fire in January and had to be torn down.
Cement Truck Crashes In Ronceverte
A truck driver miraculously escaped injury when his fully-loaded cement truck fell out of gear halfway down Ronceverte Hill. The truck, owned by RBS, careened down the bottom of the hill, through two intersections, across the railroad tracks and crashed on the southern side of the tracks.
State Legislature Begins Special Flood Session Today
Governor Cecil H. Underwood issued a proclamation Monday to call a special session of the West Virginia Legislature to address flood-related expenses and other issues. “I certainly appreciate the cooperation of the Legislature as we work together for those West Virginia families that have suffered storm and flood-related losses, said Governor Underwood.
