WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (WVDN) – The General Andrew Lewis Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met on April 20 at Cook’s Country Kitchen for their monthly meeting. Regent Deborah Phillips presided, serving as cohostess with Sandra Cowan.
The speaker was member Dr. Cyla Franklin Allison. Allison is from Hillsboro and has long been involved in living history reenactments.
Allison gave a most interesting program about women who enlisted as men in the army during the Civil War. She passed around photos of the women in uniform and books written about these women.
The women enlisted for many reasons, such as to escape a life of abuse, because they believed in the cause, for adventure and knowing that men were paid more than women. Many went through the war without ever being identified as women. When that did happen, it was often due to them being injured.
Allison is now engaged in custom picture framing and as an artist.
The May 18 meeting will be held at Cook’s Country Kitchen.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is a nonprofit, nonpolitical, women’s service organization whose main objectives are historic preservation, education and patriotism. Members are all lineal descendants of those who supported the cause of independence in the Revolutionary War back in 1776.
