Desteney Walker is a third baseman for the Greenbrier West Lady Cavaliers and another big piece to the team puzzle. The Lady Cavs are ranked third in Class A and are steamrolling their opponents. Walker possesses a good bat at the plate and a strong defensive prowess in the field and is an extraordinary leader on and off the field.

What head coach Tony Hinkle Said:

“Desteney has done a terrific job. She has been a 3-year starter on the left side of our defense. My biggest memory with her was last year at the sectional final against Midland Trail, when she hit a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning. We were down 3-0 and she put us in the lead at 4-3, and we held on. That was a big moment for her and a great moment for West. She is a good kid, very fun to be around and kind of a silent leader. She is one of those kids that is a pleasure to coach,” Hinkle said.

WVDN: What position do you play?

Walker: I’ve played shortstop in the past, but now I play the position at third base.

WVDN: What’s your favorite thing about softball?

Walker: My favorite thing about softball is seeing my team’s strong connections with each other; we bond really well, and that’s a big factor when putting together a successful team.

WVDN: Favorite band/artist?

Walker: I currently don’t have a favorite band or artist. I like to listen to different genres of music.

WVDN: Favorite song?

Walker: I also don’t have a favorite song; I just like to listen to whatever comes on the radio that day.

WVDN: Favorite movie?

Walker: My favorite movie would have to be any of the “Conjuring” movies

WVDN: Favorite softball memory up to this point?
Walker: My favorite softball memory for me was hitting a grand slam last year, scoring the winning points for the team needed to continue our run in sectionals. I felt so accomplished with my team and family cheering me on. I was so thankful to be able to experience that moment.

WVDN: Favorite food?

Walker: I really like all kinds of seafood or going out and eating Chinese.

WVDN: What’s it mean to you to be a part of the Greenbrier West softball program?

Walker: It’s one of my biggest accomplishments in high school to be able to be a part of the Greenbrier West softball program and to play with such a great group of athletes.

WVDN: How has your family impacted your career?

Walker: My family has been there coaching and supporting me throughout my whole softball career ever since I was about 7 years old. They’ve taught me everything I know down to the basics and have made me the athlete I am today.

WVDN: What are your plans after graduation?

Walker: I plan to either complete in cosmetology school or go to an 18-month RN course and complete it and get my license in that as well. I may even consider completing both.
