CHARMCO, W.Va. (WVDN) – Greenbrier West continued the quick start to their season with a convincing 9-1 over Coalfield Conference rival James Monroe on Tuesday, March 21. Preslee Treadway went 2-3 with 2 RBIs, while Brilee Redden went 2-3 at the plate while striking out 10 Maverick batters.

Redden was efficient, if not perfect, from the start. Redden collected two first-inning groundouts, issued two walks and ended the inning with a strike out of Maverick senior Emily Bailey.

Wasting no time, West went to work with a Brooke Patterson line drive to left center. Redden followed with a single in the middle, and Treadway smacked an RBI double to left center for the early 1-0 lead. The quick start would fizzle, though, with Redden stranded at third and Treadway at second. Maverick sophomore Bryleigh Thomas set the Cavaliers down in order from that point, striking out Desteney Walker, Emma Ames and Julia Herndon to end the inning.

James Monroe would tie the Cavaliers after a lead-off single by Jadyn Bradley and a two-out, RBI triple by Shailyn Wickline. Redden would collect three more K’s in the inning, however, and kept the game tied at 1 after 1 1/2 innings.

After a Kyndall Taylor groundout, Maddie Fields drew a walk and promptly put herself in scoring position when she stole second. Hannah Sweet reached base on a Chole Shires error, scoring Fields for the 2-1 advantage. Patterson grounded into a fielder’s choice that advanced Sweet to second, followed by a Redden fly ball to right field that allowed Sweet to move to third. With two outs, Thomas ended the inning with a strikeout of Treadway.

Redden made quick work of the Mavericks this time around, mowing down Shires and Madison Booth. Redden induced a ground ball out to Ames and the Mavericks went down in order.

With one out in the bottom of the third inning, Ames singled to centerfield then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Herdon drilled a comebacker to Thomas that was mishandled by the Mavericks’ Bailey at first base, allowing her to reach safely while Ames scored. Thomas recovered to strike out Kyndall Taylor, but Fields lined a double to right field that scored Herndon. Hannah Sweet grounded out to end the inning, but the Cavaliers held a 4-1 lead.

Bailey led off the top of the fourth with a liner to right field but was later forced out on the fielder’s choice at second. Redden sat down the following two Maverick batters on called third strikes to quell any comeback ideas.

The Cavaliers continued to methodically build their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Patterson led off and reached second on an error by the left fielder Bradley. Redden then doubled to centerfield, scoring Patterson while placing herself in scoring position. Treadway collected an RBI with a single to third base and Desteney Walker reached on error. Both Cavalier baserunners advanced on steals to settle in scoring position. Treadway scored on an Ames’ sacrifice fly, and Walker plated a run on a Herdon groundout to shortstop. A Taylor flyout ended the fourth inning with the Cavaliers in control at 8-1.

James Monroe went down quickly again, after a Wickline groundout to Treadway and two more Redden strikeouts.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Fields reached on an error by Maverick shortstop Madison Booth. James Monroe was plagued by six errors in the contest. Sweet grounded out to put Fields at third. Needing only a run to win by mercy rule for the second consecutive game, Coach Hinkle called a squeeze with Patterson coming to the plate. With Fields in motion, the play never materialized as a wild pitch scored Fields without the bunt of Patterson.

Fields went 1-2 with an RBI and stole three bases. Ames and Patterson were both 1-3 with Patterson tallying 2 runs.

Emily Bailey and Jadyn Bradley each had a hit for James Monroe. Shailyn Wickline had a triple and an RBI.
