A piece of West Virginia history resides in Ronceverte. Still owned and operated by a descendant of one of the original owners, Martin & Jones has been serving the area since 1904. As such, it is one of the oldest operational hardware stores in West Virginia. The store continues the long tradition of providing a personal touch and one-on-one customer service.

Approximately 119 years ago, Reese F. Martin and William T. Jones founded the store. Jones was a contractor who supervised the construction of the building that now houses Martin & Jones in the 1800s. The building in question is a massive red brick structure featuring the words “Stove Martin & Jones Hardware,” on the front. When it was built, the building only had two floors, the third floor was added later after Martin & Jones purchased the red brick.

The business began in a building known as Hurxthal’s Building. After a few years passed, the two business partners purchased the current red brick, and moved the store to its current location. Following the purchase, the partners made multiple updates and improvements.

When Martin & Jones opened, Ronceverte was a hub of commerce and activity. A railroad track ran close to the store, which allowed it to receive inventory by train. Additionally, Martin & Jones is near the river and sits on a road within the town.

Over the years, the business has been passed down through the generations. The store remains a family business. One of the current owners is descended from one of the original owners, Reese Martin.

The historical shop brims with a myriad of unique items. The proprietor stated that a common comment from customers is, “I couldn’t find it anywhere else, but I knew I could get it at Martin & Jones.” Unlike many larger stores, Martin & Jones offers many individual items often sold in large packages. The example given was someone coming in needing a single bolt, nut and screw. Rather than buy a container of each thing, the customer could pick up those singular items. According to one of the employees, Betty, the shop is incredibly customer oriented.

Even though Martin & Jones is a part of the rich history of the small area, it is somewhat of a hidden gem. It sits somewhat off the beaten path. Located at 422 West Edgar Ave. in Ronceverte, it is a place you have to see for yourself.

In addition to the usual hardware items, Martin & Jones carries Benjamin Moore Paints and stains, Snapper Lawn Equipment, Echo Power Equipment and Oregon Power Equipment & Attachments, among many others.

If you are out and about in the area, stop by Martin & Jones and see the historical hardware shop for yourself. You may just find the one item you have been searching for, plus you will get to experience top-notch customer service.
