Pioneer Days Festival Returns To Marlinton

The 2021 Pioneer Days Festival will begin on Thursday, July 8 in Marlinton.

According to the Pioneer Days Association’s Facebook page, Pioneer Days is an, “Annual festival established in 1967 and held in Marlinton, WV the second full-weekend of July each year. Festival provides free nightly musical entertainment, parades, contests, pageants, car show, carnival, arts and crafts and more.”

The schedule of events for the 2021 Pioneer Days Festival is as follows:

Thursday, July 8:

8:00 a.m. – dark: Flea Market – 3rd. Avenue

10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.: Museum opens for tours – Rte. 219

10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.: Pocahontas County Arts Council Adult Art Show – McClintic Library

1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.: Drop off entries for Food & Flower contest – Wellness Center

1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.: Drop off entries for Quilt & Handcrafts contest – Wellness Center

7:00 p.m. – 7:15 p.m.: Children & Pet parade: Registration & line up at mini-park shelter; judging at 7:15 p.m.

7:30 p.m.: Children & Pet parade – Main Street

7:45 p.m.: Bubbles, Balloons & Street Fun – Main Street at Tourism office corner

7:45 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.: Mud Hole Control – Discovery Junction Stage

Friday, July 9:

8:00 a.m. – dark: Flea Market – 3rd. Avenue

9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.: Arts & Crafts sales – Opera House

10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.: Artists on the Green (exhibits, demonstrations and hands-on advice) – behind depot

10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.: Food, flowers, quilts and handcrafts exhibits open to the public – behind depot

10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.: Photography and children’s art show – Wellness Center

9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.: Pocahontas County Arts Council Adult Art Show – McClintic Library

2:00 p.m.: Old time spelling bee & WV history contests – Museum

5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.: Rudy Elvis – Gazebo

7:00 p.m.: Fireman’s parade – Main Street

8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.: Ben Hersman & Sons of the Mountain Band – Discovery Stage

8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.: Mud Hole Control Square Dance with callers Eugene & ellen Ratcliffe callers – City National Bank parking lot

Saturday, July 10:

8:00 a.m. – dark: Flea Market – 3rd. Avenue

8:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.: Horseshoe Pitching competitions registration begins – Mini. Park

9:00 a.m.: Horseshoe Pitching competition – Mini. Park

9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.: Arts & Crafts sale – Opera House

9:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.: Jimmy McLaughlin Memorial Antique Car Show – Marlinton Elementary School

10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.: Pocahontas County Arts Council Adult Art Show – McClintic Library

10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.: Museum opens for tours – Rte. 219

Noon – 1:30 p.m.: Grand Parade registration and line up – 2nd. Avenue, ARC Building in front of Frankford Vet office. Must be in the lineup area by 1:30 p.m.! (Horses must have paperwork in hand for Coggins)

2:00 p.m.: Grand Parade with Antique cars leading the parade – 2nd. Avenue to Main Street

3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.: WVMR Liars Contest – Discovery Junction stage

4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.: Black Mountain Bluegrass Boys – Gazebo

7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.: The Bing Brothers with Jake Krack – City National parking lot

7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.: Back in the Day – 50s and 60s sock hop – Discovery Junction stage

On Wednesday, June 30, The Pocahontas Times reported that, for the 2021 festival, the Pioneer Days Liars Contest would be making a return.

The last “Liars Contest” was held in 2006, when Bill Lepp served as judge and Diane Buzzard was crowned the winner. This year’s contest is sponsored by Alleghany Mountain Radio, and the theme will be: “I heard it on the radio.”
