First Lady Cathy Justice To Debut Art Display

First Lady Cathy Justice will host a reception at the State Capitol Rotunda tomorrow – Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2021 – to launch a new artwork display featuring portraits of six Communities In Schools (CIS) students from across the state.

First Lady Justice, along with the West Virginia Department of Education, chose six CIS students to participate in the “What We’re Made Of” art project, patterned after an initiative by the National CIS office.

By featuring the students in a creative way, the project shows what each student is “made of” with art pieces featuring favorite memories, colors, activities, and special items. Art teachers Diana Frazier from Huntington High School and David Pushkin from Sherman Junior and Sherman High School painted the portraits of the students.

West Virginians who are interested in the display but who are unable to attend the First Lady’s reception may visit the State Capitol Complex at their convenience over the next three weeks to view the exhibit.

The display will remain open at the Rotunda through Friday, Oct. 15.

Then, beginning Monday, Oct. 18, the pieces will be moved to the West Virginia State Culture Center, where they will remain on display through Friday, Oct. 29.
