Since the West Virginia Daily News last reported on the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Health and Human Resources has identified 856 new cases of the virus, and confirmed the deaths of 25 additional residents.
Among those confirmed deceased are a 51-year-old Jefferson County man, an 89-year-old Mercer County woman, a 76-year-old Kanawha County man, a 92-year-old Fayette County man, an 87-year-old Jackson County man, an 85-year-old Berkeley County man, a 63-year-old Wood County man, an 88-year-old Wayne County man, a 91-year-old Mercer County woman, a 92-year-old Mercer County woman, an 87-year-old Jackson County man, a 54-year-old Marion County woman, an 83-year-old Mercer County woman, a 61-year-old Raleigh County woman, an 88-year-old Cabell County woman, a 75-year-old Gilmer County man, an 87-year-old Logan County woman, a 60-year-old Fayette County man, a 69-year-old Logan County woman, a 73-year-old Cabell County man, a 75-year-old Kanawha County man, a 71-year-old Monongalia County woman, a 75-year-old Monongalia County man, a 74-year-old Hancock County man and a 77-year-old Logan County man.
As of Sunday, Feb. 21, the total number of deaths in West Virginia attributed to complications stemming from COVID-19 is 2,261.
While the DHHR has identified 2,021 new cases of the virus in the last seven days, they have reported 2,869 residents have recovered in the same period of time. Currently, 8,954 cases of COVID-19 remain active across the state. The 6,268 laboratory COVID-19 tests performed on Saturday, Feb. 20 have yielded a daily positivity-rate of 3.77%. The cumulative positivity-rate is 5.51% and the state’s seven-day testing average is 7,789 tests per day. Thus far, 166,186 residents have been fully vaccinated against the virus and another 269,392 are awaiting their second dose.
Pocahontas County has an infection rate of 10.39% and a percent positive of 2.63%. As a result, the county has been designated as green on the DHHR daily color-coded County Alert System map for the sixth-consecutive day.
Greenbrier County has an infection rate of 7.42% and a percent positive of 1.55%, and has now been designated as green for the eighth-consecutive day. And with an infection rate of 15.07% and percent positive of 2.78%, Monroe County has been designated as green for the second consecutive day.
At present, 289 West Virginians are hospitalized with COVID-19. This is down from 327 on Sunday, Feb. 14. At 75, the number of individuals receiving treatment in area intensive care units is down from 80 last week, and the number of residents being treated with ventilators has decreased from 43 to 39. W.Va. DHHR reports that 118,401 residents who had previously been infected with the virus have since recovered.
