Greenbrier East Spartan football player Nate Baker will continue his football career on the college stage.
Earlier this week, Baker announced his commitment to West Virginia State University.
WVSU is coached by former WVU wide receiver John Pennington and will play their 2020 football season this coming March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
During Pennington’s four years as coach, the Yellow Jackets are 19-14.
Baker felt the comfort level while on campus and that “home” feeling recruits like to get.
“I chose WVSU because it was just a good fit for me. They offered a place that felt like home, they had the major I was interested in, a great football program and I will be utilized on the field,” Baker said.
When dealing with the recruiting process during the pandemic, Baker and his family have definitely felt the challenges, but now that the recruiting is over, it’s a load off all their shoulders.
“It’s been stressful for all of us,” Baker stated. “With COVID changing schedules and everything, it was hard to get places. Trying to find the best place for me wasn’t an easy decision, but once we knew, we knew,” he continued.
With the Yellow Jackets playing this spring instead of the traditional last fall, Baker has not gotten an official word when he will head out to his new home, but he does have an idea of what he will do once he arrives.
“I’m not sure on a report date. Assuming August. I plan to major in sports studies,” Baker concluded.
