The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports that 1,516 new cases of COVID-19 were identified and 39 additional deaths occurred due to complications stemming from the virus within the last 24 hours.
Among those confirmed deceased are an 88-year-old Kanawha County woman, a 43-year-old Raleigh County woman, an 80-year-old Mercer County woman, an 81-year-old Kanawha County man, a 75-year-old Barbour County man, a 59-year-old Wood County man, a 74-year-old Mineral County woman, an 85-year-old Kanawha County man, a 95-year-old Mineral County woman, a 64-year-old Putnam County man, a 77-year-old Monongalia County woman, a 66-year-old Monongalia County man, an 82-year-old Harrison County woman, a 62-year-old Wayne County man, a 97-year-old Wood County man, a 67-year-old Cabell County woman, a 97-year-old Mineral County woman, an 89-year-old Hancock County woman, an 89-year-old Mineral County woman, an 81-year-old Cabell County woman, a 78-year-old Cabell County man, a 61-year-old Upshur County woman, a 73-year-old Hancock County man, a 90-year-old Morgan County woman, an 82-year-old Mercer County woman, a 93-year-old Mercer County woman, a 49-year-old Cabell County man, an 82-year-old Kanawha County man, a 75-year-old Hancock County man, a 73-year-old Fayette County woman, a 79-year-old Kanawha County man, an 89-year-old Cabell County woman, an 80-year-old Wood County man, a 67-year-old Wood County man, a 96-year-old Hardy County woman, a 79-year-old Kanawha County man, a 78-year-old Kanawha County man, a 65-year-old Tucker County man and a 63-year-old Brooke County woman.
As of Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1,481 West Virginians have lost their lives to the coronavirus-pandemic.
The 11,473 laboratory COVID-19 tests performed on Tuesday, Jan. 5 yielded a daily positivity-rate of 11.65%. With 24,626 active cases, West Virginia’s cumulative positivity-rate is 5.18%. The state has now received 109,440 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, 60,933 of which have been administered thus far.
At present, 818 residents are hospitalized with COVID-19, 217 of whom are receiving treatment in the ICU, while 90 are being assisted with ventilators. The W.Va DHHR reports that 65,571 of those who had previously tested positive for the virus have since recovered.
