Winter high school sports in the state of West Virginia have been delayed a second time.
Governor Jim Justice said Wednesday that the new start date for the winter seasons — basketball and wrestling — will be March 1.
Justice stopped winter sports practices on Nov. 13 and teams were scheduled to start practices again on Jan. 11.
Girls high school and middle school girls basketball games were scheduled to start on Jan. 22, high school and middle school wrestling competition was to start on Jan. 25, and high school and middle school boys basketball teams could begin play on Jan. 29.
“We’ve got a lot of time left in the school year to be able to play and have the sports,” Justice said. “Just think of the numbers we will have vaccinated at that time. Absolutely, we are very hopeful that this thing is going to turn and we can absolutely go to where we can have sports indoors. And we can do that starting March 1.”
