The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reported the death of five additional residents on Wednesday, September 30. Among those confirmed deceased are a 56-year old Fayette County man, two 68-year old Kanawha County men, an 81-year old Putnam County woman and a 95-year old Boone County man.
Through a post on the DHHR website, Cabinet Secretary Bill J. Crouch stated, “As we recognize and honor the lives of these West Virginians, we also extend our sincere condolences to their families.”
With the addition of these five most recent deaths, a total of 350 West Virginians have now succumbed to complications stemming from COVID-19. All together, 15,848 cases have been identified across the state, with 156 new cases being reported within the last 24-hours. W.Va. continues to be far below the target of 7,500 tests per day, having administered only 3,370 on Tuesday, September 29. This yielded a daily positivity-rate of 3.86%, while the cumulative positivity-rate has begun to increase once again, now at 2.76%.
In comparison to surrounding states, West Virginia continues to be more effective at containing the spread of COVID-19. The case fatality rate of 2.207% is second only to Virginia’s 2.169%. At 5.23%, Kentucky’s positivity-rate is second behind W.Va. And West Virginia continues to lead the nation with 30.090% of it’s population having now been tested.
