BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (AP) — The owner of a former West Virginia hospital is teaming up with a local college on efforts to repurpose unused parts of the facility to train health care professionals.
Bluefield State College and Princeton Community Hospital will explore opportunities at the former Bluefield Regional Medical Center, the hospital said in a statement Tuesday.
While the former Bluefield hospital is closed to inpatient services, Princeton Community Hospital continues to operate an emergency department there. The collaboration is aimed at using other space at the hospital to train high-demand health care professionals, the statement said.
Under a memorandum of understanding signed Tuesday, ideas being explored include relocating the college’s health sciences programs as well as providing housing for up to 150 students at the Bluefield facility, and offering new health science programs in high-need fields.
Bluefield College President Robin Capehart said the collaboration “holds tremendous potential for everyone.”
