Navy Seaman Robert C. Carson, son of Brenda C. Pack of Lewisburg, is currently halfway through a six-month overseas deployment while serving with Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Six embarked aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, which has included duty nearby Iraq in the Persian Gulf.

Republican gubernatorial candidate, former astronaut Jon McBride assembled window parts at Lapied Incorporated in Ronceverte, a division of the Unique Balance Company, located in Ronceverte, as part of a “Working West Virginia” visit.

Autumn Piercy, a junior at Bob Jones University at Greenville, SC, has been placed on the dean’s list for both semesters of the 1994-95 school year.
She is a 1993 graduate of Seneca Trail Christian Academy and is the daughter of Ernest and Susan Piercy of Lewisburg.

U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall announced that police departments in Peterstown, Ronceverte and West Logan will receive funding from the Department of Justice “Troops to COPS” grant program.
The program is designed to encourage local police departments to hire veterans.

Shannon Warren, admissions counselor, is the newest member of the student affairs staff at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.
Warren grew up on a farm on Fairview Road and is a 1991 graduate of Greenbrier East High School.

Army National Guard Pvt. Jonathan D. Jones had completed the basic artillery cannoneer course at Fort Sill, Lawton OK.
He is the son of Charles D. and Sharon K. Jones of Lewisburg.

Liberty Baptist Church has once again opened its gymnasium to the public. All area teenagers are invited to come and use the facilities free of charge.

Lewisburg Mayor Duke Fouch, assisted by JoAnn Yates, of the Town and Country Extension Homemakers Club, observed West Virginia Breast Cancer Awareness Day by placing a handmade wreath on the front door of the Greenbrier County Courthouse.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Steven K. Campbell, son of Maynard L. Campbell of White Sulphur Springs, has returned from a six-month deployment aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, which most recently participated in the NATO air strikes in support in support of United Nations operations in Bosnia.

50 Years Ago…
Mrs. Harold Bailey of near Frankford raised a rather large cucumber in her garden this season. It measured 27 by 15 inches.

Col. William M. Banks, administrator of Greenbrier Manor, proudly announces that the 100-bed extended care facility has reached full capacity.
This facility was opened on October 1, 1969, and in face of certain setbacks, it has reached full capacity in less than one year.

Glen Jones, manager of the Federated Store, announces the 24th anniversary of the store in Lewisburg.
The event will include free gifts, cash giveaways and great savings.

A new 750 GPM Pumper has been delivered to the Rupert Volunteer Fire Department.
Three-fourths of the cost has been paid for by money contributed by citizens of the area.

Lee K. Bell, lifelong resident of Lewisburg, has been selected by the United Methodist Church of West Virginia as their “Layman of the Year” for 1970.

Navy Chief Petty Officer Ronald K. Morrison, husband of Dorotha E. Morrison of Rupert and son Okey H. Morrison of Alderson, has reported for duty aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Forrestel, currently undergoing overhaul at the Norfolk Navel Shipyard, Portsmouth, VA.

Dr. Maurice G. Brooks of the West Virginia Antiquities Commission, urged Greenbrier County citizens to take immediate steps to have eligible sites placed in line for consideration by the Commission and the establishment of a historical district.

75 Years Ago…
The resignation of Dr. Arthur Harris Clarke, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Hinton for the past 17 years, was announced. He became pastor of the church in 1928.

Morlunda H. Domins 12th, owned by Morlunda Farms at Lewisburg, was selected as champion bull in the National Hereford Show recently at the Atlanta Metropolitan and Southeastern World’s Fair.

Second Lt. Munir Yarid, son of Mr. and Mrs. S.G. Yarid of Lewisburg, has been recently promoted to the rank of 1st Lt. Yarid is serving in the South Pacific.

People residing along Route 20 from Hinton to Rainelle will have the service of a third daily round trip bus schedule, The Robert M. Toney Bus Line announced.

Excavation for a basement at the Methodist Church in Williamsburg is completed, and the walls are now being built. Eight rooms for the Sunday school classes are also being made in the church.

Mrs. C.Z. Bryant, whose husband is principal of the Lewisburg schools, is the new Greenbrier County health nurse.
She succeeds Ruth O’Toole, who returned to her duties as a Methodist missionary in the Belgian Congo in Africa.

100 Years Ago…
W.R. Thomas, late of the New River Jewelry Company at Thurmond and an experienced jeweler, has purchased the jewelry business and stock from T.P. Fry in Ronceverte and took possession October 1.

The favorite expression in the chemistry class at Greenbrier High School in Ronceverte is “I don’t know.”
Mr. Givens tries very hard to find a question that will not be answered that way. Givens said they know, but “can’t think.”

Mr. A.E White, former popular landlord and host of Hotel Greenbrier in Ronceverte, has assumed charge of the Alleghany Hotel in Covington VA.
He is one of the best known hotel men in this section of the two Virginias.

The peach trees at J.W. Thurmond’s place in Alderson were stripped of their fruit one night recently.
Within the last month, between 35 and 40 chickens have disappeared from the place, but of course the skunks got those and then came back for the peaches.
