CHARMCO (WVDN) – The WVSSAC released the third set of playoff ratings on Tuesday. After five weeks of play, there are a lot of games left to be played and a lot of positioning that can take place. The top 16 rated teams in each classification qualify for the postseason. Playoff games begin on Nov. 11 and continue through the Super Six Football Championships at Wheeling Island Stadium on Dec. 2 and 3.
Greenbrier West is the highest rated team in the area. The Cavaliers are 5-0 and rated sixth in Class A with a 7.4 rating. Although tied with the Van Bulldogs at 7.4, the Cavaliers win the tiebreaker on the strength of seven bonus points to Van’s four. Bonus points are awarded when a defeated opponent has a win within their own classification or higher. West has five wins, and their defeated opponents have seven victories. The seven bonus points are tied with Wheeling Central for the most in Class A. The Cavaliers face Class AA #22 Shady Spring on the road this Friday night.
James Monroe is 4-0 and rated 11th in Class A. The Mavericks have a 7.0 rating that includes four bonus points. The Mavericks have scored 41 points per game in three of their four victories, with a tight 6-0 win over Pendleton County being their only close game. The Mavericks travel to Class AA Pikeview on Friday night.
Midland Trail is the lone, remaining, area team to appear in the top 16. The Patriots are 4-1, winners of four straight, and have a 5.6 rating. Trail travels to Summersville to face a tough Nicholas County Grizzly team Friday night.

In Class AAA, Woodrow Wilson is off to a 4-1 start and rated tenth. The Flying Eagles are off to their best start since the 2012 season. Woodrow defeated Greenbrier East in a week two rivalry game. Another Spartan opponent, Princeton, slots in at number eleven with a 3-1 mark. The Tigers face Greenbrier East on October 28 at Hunnicutt Stadium. A third Spartan opponent, Oak Hill, is rated sixteenth with a 3-2 record. The Red Devils host Greenbrier East on October 7. Greenbrier East is 25th at 1-3 but can make a push for playoff eligibility over the next three weeks.
In Class AA, Independence is the highest rated area school. The Patriots, runners-up in 2021, have picked up where they left off with a 5-0 record, outscoring their opponents 300-8 in the process. Bluefield, a traditional Class AA power, faces Independence this Friday in Coal City. Nicholas County sits at 3-1 and holds the tenth spot. The Grizzlies have a ton of points available in their last six games as they face Midland Trail, Independence, James Monroe, and Pikeview.
