He received his diploma from St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in Huntington, WV, in 1974 and became a Virginia Board Certified Registered Nurse in 1978. After working for 10 years, he returned to school and received his Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1985 from Virginia Commonwealth University’s Medical College of Virginia. Dan’s 41-year nursing career took him from North Carolina to Utah and then to Richmond, VA, where he spent the majority of his career. He worked for the Medical College of Virginia for nine years, and then spent the next 28 years working within the Bon Secours Richmond Health System. After receiving his Post Baccalaureate Certificate, Dan transitioned from active nursing to working on the technical side as the nursing information systems liaison and doing clinical training for the hospital computer system, as well as numerous other tasks. He especially enjoyed working with the Care-A-Van program that provides free medical care to uninsured adults and children in various cities in the areas surrounding Richmond.
Dan retired in 2015 and moved to Roanoke, VA, to be closer to family. While in Richmond, he was active for many years with the Richmond Area Bicycle Association, enjoying many Cap2Cap rides and other activities. He was also a frequent participant and organizer of various Meetup activities. Dan loved the outdoors and enjoyed spending time sailing, canoeing, kayaking, biking, hiking, and camping.
