RONCEVERTE/LEWISBURG (WVDN) – Jace Acacio, Ronceverte Elementary School first grader, and Lincoln Keaton, Lewisburg Elementary School first grader, are the grand prize winners of Lewisburg House and Garden Club’s Largest Sunflower Contest.
Acacio’s sunflower measured a giant 56-1/8 inches in circumference. He is a student of Mrs. Ridpath.
Keaton’s sunflower also measured a giant 53 inches in circumference. He is a student of Mrs. Crane.
Both students were awarded a $25 cash prize and a “Birds of West Virginia” book. All participants received a conservation certificate and $1 prize.
“First graders are first this year!” said Townley Hamilton, sunflower project chair. “We are delighted by the terrific turnout from all grades in both schools today. It is our club’s annual joy to distribute sunflower seeds to the students in May and return in September for a friendly contest.”
Lewisburg House and Garden Club has been distributing seeds, teaching nature’s cycle, the value of feeding the birds, and organizing a contest since 1959.
