Dear Recycle Lady,
What is “plogging?” A New Word in My Vocabulary
Dear A New Word in My Vocabulary,
The word “plogging” was created to describe a new way of helping the environment. Originating in Sweden, plogging combines “to pick up” and “to jog,” thus means picking up trash while jogging. Many joggers do this by carrying a small trash bag with them for any trash they pick up while jogging. Of course, plogging can be done just as easily in activities such as walking, hiking, or cycling. Before disposing of the trash bag, be sure to remove any litter that can be recycled.
Dear Recycle Lady,
Can the oven racks in my old stove be recycled? Baker
Dear Baker,
Not only can the oven racks and drip pans from your stove be recycled, but the entire stove can be taken to the Recycle Center. They will remove all recyclable or usable parts from the stove and dispose of what’s left. Take it to the aluminum cans door and press the button. Someone will come to assist you.
Dear Recycle Lady,
Today I received a package in the mail that was flat and close to being square. When I opened it, I found that the cardboard was stuck to the box that was being shipped. Can this cardboard that has a sticky substance on it be recycled with cardboard? Puzzled
Dear Puzzled,
Unfortunately, the sticky substance on one side of the cardboard packaging prevents it from being recycled. The sticky or tacky residue on the cardboard will create problems when the cardboard is processed for reuse. Thus, this piece of cardboard must be put in the trash.
Dear Readers,
Ever wonder how nature “reuses” resources? The coconut octopus has a perfect example. According to freetheocean.com, this octopus gathers coconut shells that fall on the tree-lined beaches of the Pacific coast and uses them for shelter. It will even carry its treasures from place to place, holding them with its six “arms” while walking on the ocean floor with its two “legs.” A great example of reusing!
Interesting Information: At its widest point, the Pacific Ocean is wider than the diameter of the moon. The expanse of ocean is 12,300 miles across from Indonesia all the way to Colombia, S.A., a distance that is five times wider than the moon! (fto.com)
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the workshop scheduled for Friday, Aug. 26, has been cancelled. It has been rescheduled for Friday, Sept. 23. See you then.
