LEWISBURG (WVDN) – The “Zinebrier” publication is gearing up for issue no. three.
“It’s almost time for 2022’s first issue,” announced “Zinebrier” creator Hannah Pence on social media. “We are accepting submissions … thru mid-April. Direct message or email us with any questions. Looking forward to what y’all come up with.”
In 2021, Pence and Claire Jarvis created “Zinebrier.” Fashioned after ‘zines, this DIY, easier to produce magazine highlights work by local artists; the issues feature local artists from the Greenbrier Valley community.
The goal is not to present clean art, made by highly proficient and technically perfect artists. Instead, the zine captures the grittiness of works in the process. The more casual style is built for doodles, poem fragments, photos, coloring book pages, and incomplete digital art.
“We accept just about any creative work from Appalachians, no matter how big or small,” Pence said. “That has included everything from playlists, scribbled haikus on receipt paper, and crosswords to poetry, photography, paintings, and tattoo flash sheets.”
Any type of art is welcome for submission. The previous issues have had loose themes for submissions, but sticking to the theme is not a requirement for acceptance into the zine. The first issue looked at spring and the loosening of COVID-19 restrictions, with drawings, poems, doodles, and photos lining the pages. The second issue looked to Halloween, lined with fall colors.
“We are open to whatever you feel compelled to share and do not assign themes,” Pence said. “Often when people would like to work off of a theme I suggest anything they consider Appalachian or the season, the upcoming being the Spring issue for 2022.”
Pence plans to print between 100 and 200 copies of the next edition but Pence noted this could change at any moment.
To submit art or learn how to donate to the next “Zinebrier” issue, contact Pence and Jarvis at zinebrier@gmail.com, maryhannah.pence@gmail.com, or heyheyckj@gmail.com.
“You can submit to this email with high quality PNG or jpeg, or links for digital media,” Pence said. “Our due date is April 15.”
Physical donation jars will be available where issues of “Zinebrier” are stocked, such as the Washington Street Pub or Wild Bean.
The first edition is available digitally on the “Zinebrier” Instagram page.
