LEWISBURG (WVDN)- The Greenbrier East Spartans (2-2) stayed in it until the end, but Shady Spring pulled away late in a 6-5 victory on Thursday, Mar. 24 at Spartan Yards in Fairlea. Shady trailed 5-4 in the top of the seventh inning when an error by the Spartans allowed two runs to score for Shady Spring.
Miscues cost the Spartans dearly in this one.
The Tigers got things going in the first inning when Jacob Meadows doubled to lead off the game and he later scored on an error as the Tigers led 1-0 after one inning.
The Spartans knotted the game up at3-all in the bottom of the fifth inning when Gavin Bennett singled on a 2-2 count and knocked in a run. In the same frame, Gabe Patton and Henry Goodwin scored on passed balls and the Spartans took a quick 5-3 lead. Chris Heaster, Bennett and Ian Cline each had RBIs in the big inning.
Cameron Manns was credited with the victory for Shady Spring on the mound. Also a Shady basketball star, Manns went one inning, allowed no runs on one hit, and struck out three. David Young threw 1.2 innings in relief out of the bullpen.
Heaster took the loss for East. The righthander allowed three hits and three runs over two innings. He stuck out one and walked one.
Alex Johnston started the game for Shady Spring. The fireballer lasted 4.1 innings and did not allow a hit and struck out nine.
Jacob Roshau started the game for Greenbrier East. He lasted three innings, gave up two hits and one run while striking out five and walking one.
The Spartans stranded the game-tying run on third base.
Clayton Morgan, Heaster, and Bennett each collected one hit to lead Greenbrier East.
Shady Spring collected eight hits. Meadows and Adam Richmond each managed multiple hits for the Tigers.
