Former Greenbrier East inside linebacker/fullback Garrett Bennett put ink on his letter of intent on Wednesday, Mar. 16, when he signed to continue his football playing career at Waynesburg University.
The school is located in Waynesburg, Pa. Back in December they hired Dr. Cornelius Coleman as their new head coach. Also on the staff is former WVU linebacker Josh Francis, an all-Big 12 selection in the 2012 football season.
Bennett was a three-year starter for the Spartans and this past season he had 68 tackles, four sacks and an interception on defense. On top of that, he added 124 yards rushing and three TD’s on offense.
Choosing Waynesburg was a pretty easy decision for Bennett based on a couple factors.
“I really like the coaches & atmosphere. It really felt like home,” Bennett said.
Bennett will make the trek to the keystone state sometime in early August, and as of now, he understands hard work will be his greatest asset to getting on the field early.
“They have not discussed any playing time with me at this time. I am continuing to work out so hopefully I will earn playing time this fall. As of now I have been communicating with the linebackers coach which is the position that I played this past fall,” Bennett said.
Deciding on the next four or five years of your future can always be difficult, but Bennett knows in his heart he made the right choice.
“I am very satisfied with my decision. It just felt right. I am extremely excited and cannot wait to start my next chapter at Waynesburg University as a Yellow Jacket,” he concluded.
“Congratulations to Garrett and his family in this next step of his career,” Spartan coach Ray Lee said.
