LEWISBURG (WVDN) — We are only a couple months removed from the Greenbrier East Spartan football team’s hard-fought loss to George Washington, but football fans are rejoicing already with the release of the 2022 football schedule.
After two scrimmages around the State Fair on August 12 and August 19, the Spartans will stay home for their first two games against Point Pleasant and Woodrow Wilson. East opened up last season against those same two schools and beat both of them on the road.
The Spartans will then head to Robert C. Byrd on September 9 and cross state borders into Virginia when they take on Stuarts Draft on the 16th of September.
East will then have a bye week to rest up before hosting Hampshire on the last day of September and then traveling to Oak Hill the following week. The Spartans have lost the last two meetings with the Red Devils.
Ripley comes to Spartan Stadium on October 14 and Parkersburg South will head to Greenbrier County the following week.
Away trips to Princeton and Lincoln County will conclude the season.
The schedule sets up nicely for the Spartans at first glance. Having two home games to open the year is not something the coaches will complain about and the two trips to Robert C. Byrd and Stuarts Draft (VA) should at least be winnable. The open week comes at the right time with five tough, yet winnable games over the next five weeks.
Coach Ray Lee has done about as good of a job that the school has seen. East is a consistent playoff contender year in and year out, and with the return of some key players this coming season, and a schedule that has the potential to set up nicely, the Spartans should be in the mix again to see a state playoff berth.
