Four nurses at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center (GVMC) have been nominated for The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
GVMC announced the nominations on their Facebook page on Monday, January 17.
“The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary compassionate and skillful care given by nurses every day,” reads the post. “We are thrilled to recognize four members of our nursing staff who were nominated by their patients for exceptional care. Congratulations to these outstanding nurses!”
The nominees include:
– Susie Belknap, 3rd Floor Registered Nurse
– Kim Carter, Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse
– Randy Delandro, 2nd Floor Registered Nurse
– Hope Lester, 2nd Floor Registered Nurse
“As honored as I am to receive this special award, I would like for it to represent all the hardworking, caring nurses at GVMC,” said Carter. “We all strive to make our patients’ stay as comforting as we can. As a Labor and Delivery nurse, it is my sincere privilege to be part of bringing new lives into the families of our community.”
The DAISY Foundation is named for an acronym – Disease Attacking the Immune SYstem. According to their website, the foundation was formed “was formed in November 1999, by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died at age 33 of complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). The nursing care Patrick received when hospitalized profoundly touched his family.”
Though a long path ahead remains for any one of the nurses looking to take the final prize, the nominations are an acknowledgement of the struggle for those in the medical field, both before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The four nurses were originally nominated in 2021, but the local selection committee has not been able to meet due to the COVID-19. The announcement came after the meeting was able to take place.
Erin Hurst, Director of Marketing and Community Relations for GVMC, explained that the overall prize is national at least, but “each hospital selects their own award recipients and ways to recognize nominees.”
“Each nominee receives a DAISY pin,” explained Hurst. “Those who are chosen by the committee as recipients of the DAISY Award receive a pin, certificate, sculpture, and cinnamon rolls to share with their unit.”
Hurst also noted she is “on the committee, it’s tough to choose. They’re all so deserving!”
