SISTERSVILLE – The West Virginia Basketball Coaches Association has released their first weekly boys’ basketball rankings for the 2021-22 season. Greenbrier West was one of several local teams to begin the season ranked in the top ten. The Cavaliers received one first place vote and nabbed the seventh spot in Class A. West won their season opener 76-61 over Pocahontas County last Thursday.
George Washington received five first place votes and 103 points to take the top spot in Class AAAA. The 1-0 Patriots defeated Oak Hill last week 54-30. Morgantown received five first place votes and a total of 95 points to claim the second spot. The Mohigans downed Buckhannon-Upshur 72-37 in their only contest to date. Martinsburg, University, and Cabell-Midland round out the top five with the fifth place Knights receiving one first place vote.
In Class AAA, defending state champion Shady Spring received 11 of the 12 first place votes for a total of 110 points. The Tigers demolished both Wyoming County schools last week, defeating Westside 81-41 and Wyoming East 65-29. The other first place vote went to the Logan Wildcats who open play this week. Fairmont Senior, Wheeling Central, and Herbert Hoover complete the top five. The Polar Bears and Maroon Knights also begin play this week while the Huskies had impressive wins over Clay County and Pikeview to begin 2-0.
The Poca Dots claimed the top spot in Class AA with 11 first place votes and 110 points. Poca began the season with a 58-26 victory over Sissonville then dropped a 52-46 decision to Class AAA #6 Nitro. Charleston Catholic was second with 86 points. The Irish got off to a fast start with wins over Parkersburg Catholic and Notre Dame. Chapmanville Regional claimed the third spot with 83 points and Bluefield came in at number four. The Beavers, 59-52 winners at Greenbrier East last week, received the other first place vote. Defending champion Williamstown secured the fifth spot and will start their season Wednesday night at undefeated Tyler Consolidated.
James Monroe pulled down eight first place votes and 152 points in the Class A poll. The Mavericks disposed of both Giles and Narrows, Virginia to win the Narrows Christmas Tournament. Defending champion Man grabbed six first place votes and 148 points to finish second. The Hillbillies opened their season with a win over Tolsia before participating in the Bob Runyon Memorial Holiday Tournament. Man fell in overtime to East Ridge, Kentucky then narrowly escaped Mt. View 41-39 in the consolation game. Tug Valley nabbed three first place votes and 124 points to land in the third slot. The Panthers claimed the Westside Tip Off Classic with wins over Westside and Liberty-Raleigh. Greater Beckley Christian and Webster County rounded out the top five.
