In a couple of social media posts, the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Department have let concerned parents, students and staff know that they are aware of threats made toward several schools in Raleigh County.
According to the posts, made on December 8, officers became aware of threats posted on social media and began an investigation into the matter.
In a specific reference to the Shady Spring School District, the posts state that “deputies have been investigating an incident that occurred off of school property involving several juveniles.” Although the officers do not believe that any violent acts were planned to take place, they still increased their presence at local schools.
Additionally, the department investigated a social media post from a student at Independence Middle School who threatened to commit a violent act. That juvenile was detained and will be charged with a juvenile petition, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
Officers will continue to provide additional security measures and reassurance to all concerned citizens of their commitment to safety for Raleigh County Schools.
