The brush fire in the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve near Beauty Mountain is still ongoing.
According to those at the Fayette County 911 Center, the call regarding the brush fire came in at 11:42 a.m. on Monday, November 29.
Since that call, the fire has grown to include about 110 acres of wooded area and several popular trails have been closed, including Headhouse and Endless Wall trails and all trails near Nuttallburg.
The New River Gorge National Park and Preserve has provided an update on the fire on their Facebook page.
The post states that twenty firefighters from the National Park Service and the National Forest Service are working the fire, which is about 50 percent contained. The fire is burning leaf litter on the forest floor and other ground fuels, which may be beneficial for the forest.
Crews are reinforcing fire lines and searching for smaller spot fires, the post continues. “Fire personnel were able to access the Nuttallburg headhouse and verify that it was unharmed by fire activity.”
Other historic sites in the area are being assessed at this time. Crews hope that rain and humid weather entering the area will assist firefighting efforts.
