Derrick Morgan became ill in April 2021. He was transferred from Greenbrier Valley Medical Center to Carilion, then at the end of May, transferred from Carilion to University of Virginia (UVA) where he was processed for a heart transplant. On June 1, he had his first surgery to be connected to a Centrimag machine (external blood pump) for cardiopulmonary support due to heart failure.
One week later, he was placed on the transplant waiting list. On June 23, he was notified that there was a donor match. The next day, he had transplant surgery to receive his new heart.
Morgan was discharged from UVA on July 7 and is now recovering well at home. He is receiving physical therapy to regain his muscle strength and having routine biopsies of his new heart to check for rejection. So far, the results have been good.
Greenbrier County 4-H decided to do a Money Board fundraiser for the Morgan family to help offset their expenses during this difficult time. With the help of this amazing community a total of $2103.00 was raised.
