This week, the Greenbrier East Spartans football team made a splash into the WVSSAC state rankings as they are now sitting in the 10th spot in Class AAA.
The Spartans are 3-1 and have wins over Point Pleasant (Class AA #7), Woodrow Wilson (Class AAA #16) and Buckhannon-Upshur (Class AAA #26).
The top 16 teams qualify for the state playoffs, a place East has become familiar with over the last few seasons as head coach Ray Lee has led the program impressively during his tenure.
During their off week last Friday, the Spartans received a nice boost from their archrivals, Woodrow Wilson, when the Eagles defeated the Morgantown Mohigans. With the Spartans’ victory over Woodrow a couple of weeks ago, they received a data point, which is crucial as the season goes forward.
East will play Mingo Central this Friday night, Oct. 1 with hopes of ascending up the rankings even more.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
