Garden club members, due to COVID-19 restrictions this year and last, have not been able to go into the classrooms and visit with the children, distribute seeds and conduct the measuring as in the past; however, through the tremendous support of Ronceverte Elementary’s Secretary, Jennifer Morgan, Principal, Andrea Stewart, and Instructional Coach, Joyce Byers the project and contests have proceeded with great success.
Lewisburg House & Garden Club has been distributing sunflower seeds, teaching nature’s cycle, the value of feeding the birds and organizing a friendly sunflower contest
with Lewisburg Elementary School since 1959. The continuation of this project the last two years, during Covid, has largely been made possible by LES Librarian, Master Gardener and Greenbrier Gardeners member, Emily Shirey. This year Emily was assisted in measuring the sunflowers by her Junior Master Gardeners at Lewisburg Elementary.
