The Greenbrier East Cross-Country Team is working hard this season.
With almost her entire team of girls ranked on the RUNWV cross country AAA list of power runners, along with a few of the boys team members as well, Coach Kim Sexton is anxious about her teams last big meets.
Regionals, which will be hosted by Woodrow Wilson High School, are set to take place on October 21st.
According to Sexton, not if but when they make it through the State Cross Country Meet at Cabell Midland High School on October 30th, will punch their ticket to Regionals.
If you are a coach of a Middle School team and you want to inspire your runners, you should take them to a state meet at Cabell Midland. From the start line to the final award ceremony the intense atmosphere and excitement is palpable.
“I love coaching the running sports at Greenbrier East High School,” Sexton said. “But the thing I love the most about cross country at our school, in our region and pretty much throughout the state – it’s a Family. I watch my runners talking with other runners and by their senior year they have developed such a bond. I’ve watched that bond grow and mature with runners as they have made their way through college and start their future and still that it is there with this stranger they met in the middle of a field when they were in middle school or high school. It is the most encouraging sport I have ever been around.”
As Captain of the girls team (Kesterson) I can say my team is incredible this year. Everyone is so driven. You can see the passion instilled in them and how much they love what they do. Not to mention they all know how to make you laugh. I am so thankful I get to spend my senior year with this outstanding group of runners! I know we are going to do well this year.
As Captain of the boys team (Novotnik), I have seen haw as we’ve been progressing through the season, our new runners, as well as ones from previous years have been improving. These runners put in the hard work to become top runners. This team is really a family and when I started two years ago, I haven’t felt anything less. We really have an amazing group of people here and I can see some of our boys and girls making states. We have a coach that puts everything into this team and provides us with anything and everything to ensure we get our best out of any run. I am very glad to be a part of it and encourage anyone at Greenbrier East High School to come out and be a part of this team.
Coach Sexton ended by saying, “I feel for other coaches who must make those cuts because they are only allowed to many on their team or benches. In cross country, we take everyone who is willing to push themselves past their comfort zone a little more each day. By the end of two weeks, they see that this has only made them faster, stronger and mentally focused. Our team’s selection for a slogan this season, Harder, Faster, Stronger, Run as One, Work as a Team Finish and a Family. #Family”
