RONCEVERTE- At this year’s State Fair of West Virginia, fairgoers can visit the Ronceverte Volunteer Fire Department stand—an all-volunteer, community-focused non-profit that’s been serving the area for generations. The department purchased the fair stand as a fundraiser in 2022.
The Ronceverte Volunteer Fire Department has been established since 1889, making it one of the oldest fire departments in West Virginia. The department is 100% volunteer, and they’re always looking for new members. They serve the southern part of Greenbrier County, including
Ronceverte, Organ Cave, and Fort Springs, covering an area of approximately 60 square miles.
They also provide mutual aid to surrounding departments, including those in Monroe County.
When it comes to their State Fair menu, visitors can expect the same crowd-favorite options the department has offered in past years. Some of the biggest hits include the Philly Cheese, the Dixie Dog (a hot dog wrapped in bacon and deep-fried with nacho cheese, chili, slaw, and jalapeños), and the Pig Mac Dog (a hot dog wrapped in bacon and deep-fried with nacho cheese, mac and cheese, and corn chips). They also offer cheeseburgers, hot dogs, waffle fries, and more.
One of their standout features is the message that every purchase supports a long-standing non-profit emergency organization. Unlike many other food vendors, the money raised stays local and helps strengthen the community.
Also, other vendors may rotate discounts or change prices throughout fair week, but Ronceverte Volunteer Fire Department doesn’t do specials or jump pricing day-to-day. Their goal is to keep food as affordable as possible while still following fair guidelines and making a small profit to benefit the fire department. They understand that money is tight for many families, and keeping prices low is another way they try to give back.
The department relies on fair sales as a major fundraiser. The profits support top-of-the-line equipment for local citizens during emergencies and help provide the safety equipment volunteer members need to stay protected.
