SUMMERSVILLE- Nestled in a rural valley north of Summersville, Kirkwood Winery remains a familiar destination for visitors and residents looking to experience a traditional part of Nicholas County’s agricultural and tourism community.
The vineyard’s roots date to 1984, when Rodney Facemire and his sons planted the original vines. The first planting was lost after severe winter weather and drought, but the vineyard was replanted in the years that followed. Today, Kirkwood Winery says its six-plus acres produce grapes along with blackberries, raspberries, blueberries and rhubarb used in its wine offerings.
Frank and Elizabeth Dix, lifelong Nicholas County residents, have owned the winery since 2017. The business offers a broad selection of wines, including traditional red and white varieties as well as fruit, vegetable, and specialty wines. Visitors can also find locally made goods, wine-making supplies, tours and tastings at the site.
Kirkwood Winery is located at 45 Winery Lane, about three miles north of Summersville. Along with its winery operations, the location hosts weddings, private events and the annual Kirkwood Winery Wine and Music Fest. The 2026 festival is scheduled for Sept. 18-19.
