CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WVDN) – State Treasurer Larry Pack presented more than $6,000 in unclaimed property funds to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office in connection with the West Virginia Treasury’s June online firearms auction.
“Safer communities are crucial to attracting, retaining and helping families prosper. That means we need to support our law enforcement by finding additional funding by any means necessary. Holding online gun auctions to clear out evidence rooms are one piece of that puzzle,” Treasurer Pack said. “My office will continue to support our law enforcement agencies like the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office as we modernize our Unclaimed Property Program and return money back to West Virginians at a record pace.
Treasurer Pack presented $6,133.38 to the Kanawha County Sheriff Joe Crawford during a check presentation Wednesday afternoon. The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office sold 56 firearms during the June online firearms auction.
“On behalf of the men and women of the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, we will put this to good use. This will go into a fund we will use for training and equipment,” Sheriff Crawford said. “This will go a long way to further our mission to keep equipment and technology updated. This is a great thing to showcase and tell people what is happening with unclaimed property. This is the taxpayer’s money. This will benefit the taxpayers and citizens of Kanawha County. We thank the Treasurer’s Office for all it does for Kanawha County and around the state.”
Treasurer Pack recently announced the winning bid amount from the June online firearms auction was $60,492.00 placed from a federal firearm licensed dealer in West Virginia. There were 489 firearms sold from 18 law enforcement agencies across West Virginia that were up for bid. More than 15 bids were submitted from licensed dealers spanning across nine states.
In Fiscal Year 2026, which started on July 1, 2025 and ended on June 30, 2026, the Treasurer’s Office sold 2,028 firearms for a total of $296,097.23 from four online auctions. Winning bids came from federal licensed firearms dealers in Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Georgia. Bids can be made only by Federal Firearms License Dealers.
