Paroled

Edna Bond, Greenbrier-Pocahontas County character, who was serving what is believed to have been the heaviest sentence ever imposed for bootlegging – seven years and a $10,000 fine – has been paroled by the President and released from the Stark County (Ohio) workhouse. She has served two years and eight months.

Auto Beat Train Time

Lowering the fastest train time between the Pacific coast and Omaha, Neb., by approximately two hours, Mason Jurgenson of Los Angeles, Cal., drove a Chevrolet roadster 2,020 miles between the two cities in 56 hours and 47 minutes. He stopped only to eat, take on fuel and change one tire on the way. He picked up a nail on the New Mexico desert, that being the only mishap experience on the trip.

Plane Safely Down

The pilot had passed out and his wife couldn’t fly, but a Greenbrier County flight instructor talked them down to a safe landing. Don Hill, who runs a flight service here, was flying back to Ronceverte from Charleston when he heard a distress call on his radio, he said. “The lady happened to pick up the radio microphone and started hollering for help. She told me she didn’t know how to fly.” The airport tower got the two planes on radar, and after a 20-minute search in clouds, Hill saw the Cessna 172 single engine plane. “We got in formation and I was able to get her back. She was calm and doing a remarkable job. She was really learning to fly,” he said.

Drought Losses Up In Millions

Drought losses mounted to hundreds of millions of dollars in South Dakota, fire blackened hundreds of brushland acres in California, and tornadoes whirled over at least three states. Sen. George McGovern, D-S.D., said he will hold hearings soon to explore the possibility of improved federal aid to farmers hit by the drought in South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

Resort Applies For Gray Machines

Officials at The Greenbrier have confirmed the hotel will apply to the state for permission to operate “gray machines,” video gambling devices. This represents quite a turnabout for the luxurious White Sulphur Springs resort. When the state legislature was in the process of crafting the law that would allow a casino referendum for The Greenbrier, corporate officials protested against the inclusion of slot machines in the description of allowable gaming opportunities. Hotel representatives have always maintained that any gaming facility at The Greenbrier would resemble the plush casinos found in Monte Carlo more than the glitzy gambling palaces of Las Vegas or Atlantic City.
