CULPEPER, Va. (WVDN) — The Covington Lumberjacks swept a doubleheader against the Culpeper Cavaliers, combining strong pitching and a powerful offensive attack to claim a pair of victories.
The Jacks opened the day with a 10-0 shutout win before completing the sweep with a 9-4 victory in the nightcap.
Game One: Jacks Roll to 10-0 Shutout
Covington wasted little time taking control in the opener, scoring two runs in the first inning before breaking the game open with a five-run second inning. The Lumberjacks added three more runs in the fourth inning to secure the shutout victory. Zach Doorlag led the offensive attack, going 2-for-3 with a home run, double and four RBIs. His grand slam in the second inning highlighted the five-run frame.
Jose Alfonso added a big performance, going 2-for-2 with a home run, double and three RBIs. Jake Ambrosio also homered, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI. Luis Acosta, Peter Crespo and Frankie Clark each added a hit, while Acosta and Crespo drove in runs. On the mound, Quindon Wright earned the win with five dominant innings. Wright allowed just one hit while striking out four and facing only 15 batters. Covington finished Game One with 10 runs on nine hits and no errors, while holding Culpeper to one hit.
Game Two: Late Power Pushes Jacks Past Cavaliers
The second game featured an early back-and-forth battle before Covington took control with a five-run second inning.
After Culpeper scored three runs in the first inning to take a brief lead, the Lumberjacks responded with a five-run second inning to move ahead 7-3. Jonathan Vazquez started the inning with an RBI single before Jan Oquendo delivered a two-run double. Jose Alfonso followed with a two-run single to extend the lead.
Culpeper added a run in the fourth inning, but Covington answered with insurance runs late. Peter Crespo hit a solo home run in the sixth inning, and Luis Acosta added another home run in the seventh to seal the 9-4 victory. Acosta finished 1-for-3 with a home run, three runs scored and an RBI. Oquendo collected two hits and two RBIs, while Crespo went 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI.
Doorlag added two hits, two walks, two runs and an RBI. Alfonso drove in three runs, while Vazquez and Levesque each scored a run. Reyson Miranda earned the win after five innings of work, allowing four runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Aniel Berbes closed out the victory with two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two. The Jacks finished Game Two with nine runs on 10 hits and one error.
Covington’s doubleheader sweep featured 19 runs, 19 hits and three home runs as the Lumberjacks continued their strong stretch of play.
