The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at the West Virginia University School of Nursing has been named a WVU Board of Governors Program of Excellence.
“This recognition affirms the School of Nursing’s unwavering dedication to academic excellence,” said Dr. Tara Hulsey, Dean and E. Jane Martin Endowed Professor. “Our expert faculty go above and beyond in preparing the next generation of nurses for skilled and compassionate care.”
This recognition, the first ever for the BSN program, encompasses all undergraduate programs, including the traditional BSN, the Accelerated BSN, RN to BSN, and LPN to BSN.
Criteria for a successful program includes distinction, including state or national recognition; faculty, including qualifications and credentials; graduates, including evidence of success in career placement or higher education; and curriculum and assessment, including measurable learning outcomes and accreditation.
The WVU School of Nursing’s BSN program is consistently ranked as the No. 1 baccalaureate program in West Virginia by RegisteredNursing.org, and graduates regularly achieve a 100% first-time NCLEX-RN licensure pass rate.
“This distinction is a direct reflection of the success of our students, dedication of our faculty, and excellence in curriculum and assessment for our undergraduate programs,” said Dr. Brad Phillips, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs. “The WVU SON continues to lead the mission of the school through the delivery of excellent student-centered programs and evidence-based teaching, scholarship, and service.”

Requests for the Program of Excellence designation are considered by the Undergraduate or Graduate Council, which nominate the programs they deem worthy of the designation. The Provost then reviews the nominations and endorse those that are appropriate, and the Board of Governors consider the nominations certify those that they deem. The Program of Excellence designation lasts five years, beginning at the time of the award until the program’s next review.
