ALDERSON, WV – This week, Senator Jim Justice joined Federal Bureau of Prisons Director Billy Marshall and U.S. Attorney Moore Capito at FPC Alderson to honor correctional workers who lost their lives in the line of duty during a Correctional Workers Week ceremony.
“Our correctional workers are some of the toughest, most dedicated public servants we’ve got. They keep people safe, keep order in difficult situations, and do it day after day without asking for much in return. It was an honor to speak at the Correctional Workers Week Memorial Service and to pay tribute to heroic lives lost while working. As Governor, I saw firsthand all these folks sacrifice to do their jobs, and I worked to make sure their service and value to our communities was recognized. I will keep fighting the good fight in the Senate and do everything I can to support them, because answering the call of duty is what our correctional officers do every single day,” said Senator Jim Justice.

BACKGROUND:
- Senator Justice attended a Memorial Service at the Prison honoring 27 correctional workers across the country who have been killed in the line of duty.
- While Governor, Senator Justice placed a strong emphasis on turning the state’s prison system around and ensured correctional officers were compensated for the dangerous work they do.
- In 2023, then-Governor Justice appointed Billy Marshall to serve as Commissioner of the West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
- One of Senator Justice’s first bills when he came to the Senate was the BOP SCAN Mail Act, which puts safeguards in place to protect correction officers from life-threatening drugs placed in the mail.
