LEWISBURG- The EG Rockies Varsity Black baseball team competed this past season in the Top Prospects Middle School League–a league based in Beckley– and showed why this certain group of athletes are the future of the Greenbrier East Spartans.

They finished the regular season 14-0 then cruised through three playoff games, including a championship game and were crowned undefeated champs with a final record of 17-0.

The team was coached by head man Cam Huffman and assistants Eric Workman, Jason DeHaven, Kevin Brown, Tanner McCallister, and Hunter Ridgeway, all played large and critical roles in the team’s success.

The following is a complete wrap up of the Rockies season with stats, schedules, rosters, and some interesting notes about the magical spring.

Michael Boothe – .535 average, 5 doubles, 8 HR, 29 RBI, 31 R, 18 SB

Peyton Ervin – .550 average, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 7 RBIs, 26 R, 30 SB

Carter Huffman – .462 average, 5 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR, 12 RBI, 20 R, 18 SB

Colton DeHaven – .459 average, 3 doubles, 16 RBI, 27 R, 31 SB

James Godby – .400 average, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 9 RBI, 18 R, 14 SB

Acen Workman – .381 average, 1 double, 23 RBI, 5 R

Elijah Flood – .342 average, 3 doubles, 9 RBI, 21 R, 12 SB

Dillon Jackson – .300 average, 7 RBI, 12 R

 

PITCHING

Michael Boothe – 8-0, 1.969 ERA, 60 Ks, 32 IP

Peyton Ervin – 2-0, 2.442 ERA, 22 Ks, 14.1 IP

Carter Huffman – 4-0, 3.585 ERA, 17 Ks, 13.2 IP

 

NOTES

– All 10 players on the roster pitched in a game

– All 10 players have at least 5 runs scored and 1 RBI

– Every player played at least 47 innings in the field

– Every player had at least 31 at-bats

– Every player played at least three different positions; Four played 4 or more

– Acen Workman 12 passed balls in 74 innings

– The team is made up entirely of 8th graders. Eastern Greenbrier Purple is a second varsity team made up up 7th and 6th graders

– The league is Top Prospects Middle School Baseball. It is run out of Beckley with most of the games played at Linda K. Epling Stadium. A few are played at Shady

Spring High School and Hollowell Park in Lewisburg. There are 8 varsity teams in the league (EG Black, EG Purple, Western Greenbrier, Shady Spring, Independence, Beckley-Stratton, Park and Trap Hill). There is also a JV division with 8 teams.

– Sam Shirley (5th grade) filled in on EG Black from the JV team the last two regular season games because of injuries

– Boothe, Huffman, Ervin, DeHaven and Workman made the Top Prospects all-star team, which was chosen prior to all-star weekend in the middle of the season

– Boothe was the tournament MVP
