WAYNESBORO, Va. (WVDN) – Covington erased two separate deficits but surrendered the winning runs in the bottom of the ninth as the Lumberjacks fell to the Waynesboro Generals, 7-6, on the road Saturday night. The loss drops Covington to 7-1 on the season.

Waynesboro jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning before the Lumberjacks answered in the third. Hunter DePriest tripled and Covington plated three runs to even the game at 3-3. The Generals regained control with two runs in the fourth, but the Lumberjacks responded again in the fifth. Covington scored three runs in the frame to take its first lead of the night at 6-5.

The Jacks held that advantage through the sixth, seventh and eighth innings before Waynesboro rallied in the bottom of the ninth, scoring two runs to walk off with the 7-6 victory. Covington finished with six runs on 10 hits and committed one error, while the Generals scored seven runs on nine hits and committed two errors.

Ray Yero led the offense, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs while adding a stolen base. Mason Reid collected two hits and drove in a run, Grant Smith finished 2-for-5 with a run scored, and Jacob Levesque scored twice after reaching base three times with two walks and a hit. DePriest went 1-for-5 and delivered a triple, while Darrius Brown drove in two runs. Bryant Zayas added an RBI and Thomas Fratto scored once while drawing three walks.

Jacob Smith started on the mound and worked two innings, allowing three runs on three hits. Enzo Gurgel tossed one inning and surrendered two runs while striking out two. Deundre Jones kept the Lumberjacks in the game with a dominant relief appearance. The Pearland, Texas native threw four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out eight batters. Aniel Berbes suffered the loss after allowing two runs in two-thirds of an inning as Waynesboro completed the ninth-inning comeback.

The Jacks will close out the weekend on the road at Charlottesville to take on the Tom Sox, first pitch 3pm.
