MORGANTOWN- Fresh off a Regional win, the West Virginia Mountaineers will stay in Morgantown for one more weekend to host–for the first time ever–the Super Regionals.
A sellout crowd is expected, plus the “free hill” seating will most likely be as full as it has ever been.
The Mountaineers will welcome the Cal Poly Mustangs who won the Los Angeles regional last weekend that included the number one overall seed, UCLA Bruins.
At the time of this writing, it is unclear who WVU will put on the mound and which days. They play the first game today, June 5, at noon, the second on Saturday the 6th at noon, and if necessary, Sunday, June 7 at a time to be determined.
One thing is certain, however. Maxx Yehl and Chansen Cole will get two starts and the other if needed, will come from either Ian Korn or Dawson Montessa. Montessa had his best outing of the year last Sunday against Wake Forest and then he came in for game seven on Monday against Kentucky, got the Mountaineers out of a jam, and was the winning pitcher again. It would not be surprising at all if coach Steve Sabins rolled with the junior at some point.
Players to watch for WVU include Gavin Kelly (Morgantown Regional MVP and #1 ranked MLB prospect for 2027), Armani Guzman, Paul Schoenfeld, Matthew Graveline, Tyrus Hall, Brodie Kresser, and Ben Lumsden.
If West Virginia finds a way to prevail in the series, they will head to Omaha for the first time in school history and play in the College World Series.
Stay tuned the West Virginia Daily News Facebook page for scores, pics, videos, and updates as it’s possible, we will be at the field in person for at least one game.
