SUMMERS COUNTY, W.Va. (Hinton News) – This week’s piece is a bit different in that it isn’t about a piece of Summers County history. I am seeing information about this interesting antique that my grandfather, Bernard Thompson, and I purchased at a Summers County estate auction years and years ago. No one knew what it was when it was being auctioned off, and they have still not been able to find out anything about it since.
But that didn’t stop granddad from bidding and winning the sale. Granddad was always “picking” before it became popularized by shows such as “American Pickers.” He was always on the hunt for unique and strange pieces. The weirder the better!
It sat in his kitchen, on a shelf by the back door, for decades until he passed in 2018; then it became mine. People have told me it is an antique sausage stuffer, an antique bottle corker. Someone just recently told me it could have been a spout for a whisky barrel. At this point, I know less than when we first purchased decades ago. Ha.
If you have any idea of what this piece truly is, please email me at greenbrierantiques@gmail.com.
