RONCEVERTE, W.Va. (WVDN) — The Greenbrier Recycling Center hosted an Earth Day Open House on Wednesday, April 22. The event drew a large turnout as families and neighbors stopped by to tour the facility and learn about sorting practices. Free hot dogs, homemade chili, chips and drinks were served, helping create a festive, community-oriented atmosphere.
The open house highlights included guided tours that offered attendees a behind-the-scenes look at sorting, contamination prevention, and the recycling processes. The Recycle Lady hosted a Q&A, answering questions for the visitors. One young recycler stood out to the Recycle Lady.
Hunter Smith of Organ Cave, a local homeschooled student, attended the open house and was celebrated as a recycling extraordinaire for his growing passion and knowledge about recycling. He and his family visit the local recycling center one to two times weekly, a routine he genuinely looks forward to. Hunter’s presence at the event included sharing practical sorting tips with attendees and modeling responsible recycling practices.
Hunter’s mother, Hope Smith, commented: “Hunter is developing a strong passion for recycling and caring for the environment.”
The family appreciates that the center is open seven days a week, making it easy to stop by and sort recyclables. With clearly labeled bins, the process is simple and accessible for all ages, Smith went on to say.
Hunter says he enjoys “helping the earth” and is always checking containers before throwing them away, often catching items that shouldn’t have been tossed. He also encourages others to stop by for a quick tour if they’re unsure, or to take steps toward recycling on their own. His enthusiasm is a reminder that even small, everyday actions can make a meaningful difference.
The open house demonstrated the community’s commitment to environmental education and practical action on Earth Day.
