CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WVDN) – State officials today announced new monitoring and enforcement actions following yesterday’s chemical incident at the Ames Goldsmith Catalyst Refiners facility along the border of Nitro and Institute.
The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is implementing a comprehensive air monitoring plan in coordination with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Air sampling will be conducted both at the facility and in surrounding areas, while existing monitoring stations are being closely watched for any unusual changes.
DEP’s Environmental Enforcement teams have also launched a full investigation into the facility. That review will examine the cause of the incident as well as the facility’s overall compliance with state and federal regulations. In addition, officials are closely monitoring the site’s wastewater handling and any potential runoff to ensure there are no impacts to surrounding systems.
The West Virginia Department of Homeland Security’s Emergency Management Division (EMD) remains in contact with Kanawha County officials. At this time, no additional state resources have been requested, though teams remain prepared to respond if conditions change.
State officials are also continuing to gather information on individuals who sought medical treatment following the incident.
“Our focus is on getting answers and ensuring the community is protected,” said Governor Morrisey. “We are taking a thorough, coordinated approach to monitoring this situation and holding all responsible parties accountable.”
Residents in the surrounding area should continue to follow guidance from Kanawha County officials.
