FAIRLEA- The Greenbrier East Spartans may be hitting their stride at just the right time as they picked up their second straight win on Monday, April 20 when they run-ruled the Woodrow Wilson Flying Eagles 19-6 on a cold, chilly evening at Spartan Yards.
“I’m proud of our guys tonight,” head coach Cory Mann said after the game.
“It hasn’t been an easy season; we’ve taken some hits. But what people don’t see is what’s building underneath, and tonight, you saw it come to life,” he added.
After falling behind 4-0 in the top of the first and all with two outs, the Spartans came together, settled down, and answered with four runs of their own in the bottom half.
Nelson Lynch doubled and then Sam Roshau followed with a single. Three batters later, Clay Patton, who had a huge game, smacked a 2-run triple to make the score 4-3. DP Seams hit an RBI groundout to cap the scoring at 4-4 after one.
Josiah Spencer’s RBI single gave the Spartans the lead 5-4 early in the second and two batters later, Patton took a 1-1 pitch and drove it over the left field fence for a 3-run shot and Greenbrier East went ahead 8-4. Patton hit for the cycle in the game.
Woodrow scored their final two runs of the game in the third as they tried to fight back, but the Spartans offense and for the most part, Layne Lambert on the mound was just too much for the Eagles to overcome.
East pounded out 19 hits along with their 19 runs in their best effort of 2026.
“Tonight wasn’t just about getting a win, it was about becoming the team we’ve been working to be,” Mann said.
Our guys stayed present. No fear, no noise, no outside distractions, just competing one pitch at a time. That’s the standard, Mann concluded.
With the victory, East improves to 4-13.
East lives by the slogan- SPARTA. Mann also expanded on what that is below:
You saw Sacrifice—guys putting the team first, doing the little things that don’t always show up in the box score.
You saw Prepared—guys trusting the work they’ve put in, stepping into big moments with confidence.
You saw Accountable—when things didn’t go perfect, nobody pointed fingers. They owned it and responded.
You saw Relentless—we didn’t flinch. We kept coming, pitch after pitch.
You saw Toughness—not just physical, but mental. Staying locked in when it would’ve been easy to fold.
And you saw Attitude—energy, belief, and a dugout that never backed down.
That’s who we are.
