Mystery Mountain Lion
A Pocahontas County farmer stalked to within 100 feet of the 100-pound animal, and felled it with a single shot in the chest as it was about to devour a lamb it had caught. It was believed to be the first mountain lion, or Eastern Cougar, killed in West Virginia in more than 50 years. The last serious attempt to authenticate the presence of cougars in the state was in the early 1930s. At that time, members of a Smithsonian expedition spotted fresh cougar tracks, but failed to make visual contact with any mountain lions.
Second Cougar Sighted Near Here
Conservation officers stood guard today over a mountain lion that “appeared relatively tame,” the second cougar sighted in Pocahontas County in a week. Capt. Lawrence Wyatt Jr. of the Department of Natural Resources said about 100 area residents gathered in the rural area where the animal was found and many wanted to kill it. “The officers are there to prevent the animal from being killed until it can be tranquilized and removed,” said Wyatt.
